LCU

Codex computer use, decoupled from the Codex app.

Give Claude Code, Codex CLI or Pi the original computer-use runtime from the ChatGPT desktop app, with no Codex sign-in. The app stays installed on your machine and supplies the runtime; LCU handles setup and harness integration.

30-second showreel with sound. In a terminal, an agent uses LCU to read a Calendar window, type a launch-review note into TextEdit and save it, then open the LCU repository in Chrome.

How it works

Your harness. The original runtime.

  1. 01

    Your harness

Claude Code, Codex CLI, Pi, or your own through the shared client.

  2. 02

    LCU

Setup, harness adapters and turn lifecycle.

  3. 03

    ChatGPT desktop app

The original runtime and instructions, on your machine.

LCU checks the installed app for compatibility and runs its original computer-use runtime. Instructions, tool results and approval requests pass through unchanged. Your harness forwards them to the model and cleans up when each turn ends.

Features

Give your agent a computer.

Desktop apps

Sees and uses any window.

Read windows, click, type and take screenshots.

Chrome · opt-in

Chrome, when you want it.

Opt-in control of tabs through the official extension. Each site still needs your approval.

Harnesses

  • Claude Code
  • Codex CLI
  • Pi

Works in the harness you already use.

Other harnesses integrate through the shared JavaScript client.

Platforms

  • darwin-arm64
  • linux-arm64
  • linux-x64

macOS & Linux.

Apple Silicon macOS, and Linux on ARM64 or x86-64 (Ubuntu 24.04-compatible, X11).

No sign-in

Uses the app you have.

LCU never downloads or installs the ChatGPT app, and doesn’t need you to sign in to it.

Original runtime

Nothing reimplemented.

LCU doesn’t implement browser control, screenshots, accessibility or input. It runs the original runtime, keeps the original instructions byte-for-byte, and preserves the original approval prompts.

  • Runtimeoriginal
  • Instructionsbyte-identical
  • Approvalspreserved

Install

One prompt. That’s it.

Copy this into your agent. It checks your OS, architecture and prerequisites, installs the latest release, and guides you through any permissions.

Tell your agent
Install and configure LCU for this harness using the latest release.
Follow https://raw.githubusercontent.com/0xpolarzero/lcu/main/docs/INSTALLATION.md
Check my OS, architecture, and prerequisites, then guide me through any required permissions.

Then restart your harness, ask it to use LCU to take a screenshot of a harmless window, and approve the request. That’s the first check that everything works.

Manual install

Prefer to do it yourself?

Download the archive for your machine and its .sha256 file from the latest release, then follow the installation guide.

  • macOS · Apple Silicondarwin-arm64.tar.gz
  • Linux · ARM64linux-arm64.tar.gz
  • Linux · x86-64linux-x64.tar.gz

Optional

Enable Chrome.

Ask your agent:

Tell your agent
Enable Chrome control in my LCU setup using the installation guide:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/0xpolarzero/lcu/main/docs/INSTALLATION.md#desktop-and-browser

Enable the official extension in your Chrome profile and restart your harness. Sites still require approval. Claude Code’s Chrome support is experimental; see the adapter notes.

Requirements

What you need, plainly.

Before you install

  • The official ChatGPT desktop app. It supplies the runtime and instructions. Download it from OpenAI; LCU never installs it for you.
  • Python 3.12+.
  • Your harness: Claude Code, Codex CLI or Pi, installed and signed in.
  • Codex CLI users: update before setup to get the required mcp_tool hook support.
